New Requirements Statistics

I always have my eye open for any statistics relating to software development projects in general, and any that relate to requirements in particular.  Here are some interesting statistics that I’d thought I’d share.

From Capers Jones in a presentation called “Quality in 2011:  A Survey of the State of the Art” in which he presents data derived from many years’ worth of sources including a total of about 13,500 projects from 24 countries.   Here are some of his findings …

  • Requirements are the highest source of defects in delivered applications (at a rate of 0.23 defects per function point compared to 0.19 for defects from Design, 0.09 from Coding, 0.12 from Documents, and 0.12 from bad fixes).
  • Defects having requirements as their source are the hardest to prevent and repair.
  • Information Software has more than double the number of defects in delivered applications (per function point) than system software, commercial software, military software, or outsourced software.

From a recent Gartner report on Improving IT Project Success published 2 September, 2011,

  • In spite of average efforts on requirements analysis and management having increased from 6% in 2006 to 14% in 2010, there has been no improvement to defect rates.

I’d be interested in hearing any recent statistics you may have come across as well!
