Blueprint Raises 15.9 Million in Growth Capital

New round to accelerate Blueprint’s presence in USA, Europe and Asia Pacific

TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Blueprint™, a global leader in requirements definition and management software, today announced the completion of a growth capital round of funding totaling $15.9 million. This round was led by a new investor - Tandem Expansion Fund, with the participation of existing investors from BDC IT Venture Fund, Walsingham Partners Fund, and several private investors. The money raised will be used to accelerate Blueprint’s growth by expanding sales, marketing and channel partner presence and capacity in USA, Europe and Asia Pacific.

"We are delighted to have led this financing and believe Blueprint is well on its way to becoming the global standard in the burgeoning requirements definition and management software category within the Global 2000," says Alex Moorhead, managing partner at Tandem Expansion Fund. "We are impressed with the market and customer demand, along with the ROI Blueprint customers have experienced. We are confident in the Blueprint team’s ability to scale the business in realizing its full potential."

"Today, IT departments are under tremendous pressure to deliver deeper software capabilities with less budget to support changing business requirements," says Roger Wilson, partner at BDC’s IT Venture Fund. "The requirements definition and management software market is at a tipping point for explosive growth over the next two to three years as Business and IT leaders embrace powerful platforms like Blueprint that improve business and IT collaboration and finally close this major gap in the software development process that is costing the industry over $100B annually in waste and rework."

Developing complex software projects requires close collaboration between business stakeholders and IT who must agree on and manage multiple requirements through to completion. While projects increase in complexity, most Global 2000 companies still rely on Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and Visio drawings, all pasted into thick paper-based requirements files. This time-consuming, manual process is error prone, causes poor stakeholder collaboration and validation, and can result in ill-defined requirements that often change substantially during the project lifecycle. This legacy model can result in 30-50 percent project delays and budget overruns, significant scope reduction, poor end-user adoption, and escalating project backlogs.

Blueprint has changed that equation. Over the past five years, more than 200 customers — including major Fortune 500 banks, insurance companies, retailers, pharmaceutical companies and government agencies — have improved collaboration between their business and IT teams using Blueprint’s patented requirements visualization and social features. The results — higher quality requirements and 30-50 percent faster on-budget delivery of truly usable software applications, along with dramatically reduced project backlogs.

"We have demonstrated that we can dramatically improve the software development performance of our initial set of Global 2000 customers, leaving us well positioned as a leading requirements platform as global demand takes off," says David Nyland, President & CEO of Blueprint. "For this we need to grow our presence in the US, EMEA, and Asia as well as through mature distribution channels such as HP’s and Microsoft’s partner ecosystem. We are now significantly strengthened by our financial partners who have validated our business plan and are supporting us with expansion capital to enhance our global penetration."

Blueprint Requirements Center 2010 Wins Jolt Productivity Award

TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Blueprint™, the world leader in requirements management solutions for enterprise application development, has been honored with one of the Jolt Productivity Awards in the highly competitive Design, Architecture, and Planning Tools category. Blueprint was previously awarded the Jolt Product Excellence Award in 2009.

Blueprint provides the most comprehensive requirements management tool to define and manage software requirements that drastically improve software quality and accelerate project delivery. Blueprint users define requirements using integrated text and graphical formats, validate using generated documents and live simulation, and communicate base-lined requirements via integrations with developer and tester tools.

“We are very honored to be recognized for the second time with a Jolt Productivity Award,” said David Nyland, CEO of Blueprint. “Being a leader in this new generation of requirements tools that are lighter-weight, more collaborative in nature, and able to fit the changing needs of today’s globally distributed organizations is truly exciting.”

Since 1990, the Dr. Dobb's Jolt Award have been presented annually to showcase products that have "jolted" the industry with their significance and made the task of creating software faster, easier, and more efficient. Winners are selected from qualified nominations by an esteemed panel of judges consisting of Dr. Dobb’s editors, academics, consultants, and well-known authors.

“One of the most important elements of any project is defining requirements,” said Jon Kurz, a Jolt Award judge. “With no shortage of features, a simple interface, and a great attention to detail, Requirements Center has earned its place as a musthave tool, which will bring greater productivity and quality to projects of all sizes.”

Jolt Award judges not only examine the standard criteria of audience suitability, productivity, innovation, quality, ROI, risk and flexibility, but also seek to honor products that are ahead of the curve. Jolt-winning products are universally useful; are simple, yet rich in functionality; redefine their product space; and/or solve a nagging problem that has consistently eluded other products and books.

Jolt Award are presented by Dr. Dobb’s, part of UBM TechWeb’s InformationWeek Business Technology Network and one of the most respected and trusted brands for developers. A complete list of the 19th annual Jolt Award winners is available at http://www.joltawards.com.

Requirements Are Approved – So What?

We all strive to write the perfect requirements. Many of us are familiar with the somewhat vague, ubiquitous and poorly conceived scribbling that are jotted down in the brief few minutes that we get to spend with the stakeholders and subject matter experts (SME).The stakeholders and SME’s tell us about a new, brilliant, wonderful and life changing system that will be implemented later this year….(hopefully); and we struggle to use our scribbling to write the requirements to bring this system to life.

Improve Requirements and Reduce Software Development Rework

As If Rework Wasn’t Enough…

Studies show that somewhere between 25-50% of software project budgets are consumed by re-work. That means work that needs to be done again because, for some reason, the results were not correct. Significantly, 70-85% of this rework is directly related to poor requirements. Of course, we all know that there are many reasons requirements fall short and that there are many things that can be done to remedy this. But if the wasted budget wasn't enough to think about, there's more!

How Much Rework Do You Have?

As a requirements solution vendor we talk with people every day about their requirements issues, assist them to understand the root causes, and help them articulate a business case for investing in a solution. For most companies, the biggest single inefficiency in their software development efforts is the amount of rework that's done due to inadequate requirements.
